As flagged up in the previous post Central Station (Central Station is creative social network for people interested in art, film and design..) are coming to visit SuperFly’s home of Dundee on 6th Feb and they’ve entrusted us with looking after Street poster duties. (Thanks once again to Dundee’s Street Advertising Services for sponsoring the space.)
More details will follow shortly but for now, once you’ve checked out the new pics (below), and after you’ve signed up to the SuperFly mailing list get over to Central Station, join the Dundee Pop-up group and get yourself registered for the day’s events.
And if you’d like a cheeky look at a couple of the Dundee Pop-up indoor posters which will be surfacing around the pop-up venues then head over to FormFityFive
I’ll be blogging and tweeting the posters as they ‘pop-up’ around the City.. but, for now, here’s just a teaser.. and if you want to see them in the flesh, here’s where you can find them: Map
Well, here it is, the first official ‘SuperFly’ business of 2010 and what a blinder..!
Central Station, the Glasgow based creative collective – who work to bring together ‘people, projects, collections and events’ – are heading north-east to tour the creative world of Dundee on 6th February.
This was the perfect opportunity to collaborate and SuperFly have the honour of managing street awareness in the City with a brand new batch of super street fly posters..!
We’ve kept it ‘pure Dundee’ this time with five local artists being featured – Jen Collins, John Patterson, Lindsey Gardiner, Nikki McWilliams and Lauren Gentry.
So, keep it here for images and locations of the posters as they surface during the coming week.. and we’ll also run a focus on each of the artists over the next couple of weeks so stay tuned!
Go to Central Station for more info of the day and register for a space from Monday 25th January, 2010.
First post of the year, and probably the last regarding SuperFly ’09..
Finally I have a copy of the STV broadcast featuring ‘documentary footage’ of the first SuperFly poster (ever..!) going up on the streets of Dundee. A permanent embed can be found on the ’09 exhibition page, but for you convenience please see the embed below ;)
It’s maybe been a little quiet of late but that’s not to say we’re busy doing nothing… in fact, just to sure you don’t miss out on any impending Super-duperFly announcements you can now join the SuperFly mailing list and be the lucky recipient of ‘SuperFly Paper’ the SuperFly newsletter. We promise not to share your info.. blah, blah, blah.. etc, but what we will do is keep you up to the minute on the latest and greatest in the world of SuperFly.
So, no excuse for missing the next call for entries or the next show times! Get down with the SuperFly and join the list on the ‘contact’ page.
Remember also that you can email us with questions and suggestions (superguy@superfly.org.uk) or simply keep a lazy eye on us via Twitter ‘@onthesuperfly’
Well, perhaps it goes against some of the principles of SuperFly… an indoor exhibition, a limited viewing time, etc… but, this was a ‘special’ occasion… to be honest, we were lucky to be given the opportunity… :)
Anyway, this was the story: NEoN ’09, Dundee’s inaugural Digital Arts Festival took place fom Friday 13 – Sunday 15 Novemebr 2009. A great few days of lectures, workshops and ‘exclusives’ in the home of Scotland’s Gaming Industry hub. So fun was had by all and you can find out more at www.northeastofnorth.com
It was, afterall, the ‘NEoN’ announcement back in February that inspired the birth of SuperFly and so it was fitting that we were given the opportunity to exhibit at NEoN’s public exhibition which featured not only artwork from world class, Dundee born computer games such as Real Time Worlds’ “APB” and Ruffian’s “Crackdown 2″ – both of which featured heavily during the weekend; but also concept artwork by none other than Bud Luckey of PIXAR!
(Who knew we’d peak so soon ;) )
So, SuperFly and Pixar in the same room – probably never to be repeated, so enjoy!
And just in case you’re wondering, we hope to be back very soon to announce the next SuperFly event… so keep it here… and on Twitter (@onthesuperfly)
Thanks BTW to @timmmpryde for the pic above – hopefully more to follow!
5 short weeks ago (Monday 28 September), at just about this time (11.05am) the SuperFly ’09 kicked off in style! The first poster went up and was documented in pictures and on film as SuperFly became the ‘And finally…’ story for STV Tayside’s local 6.00pm bulletin.
The Drum, who had run a magazine story on us already, before we’d even had one entry submitted, did another article on SuperFly on their website; the good folks at Creative Review, who also had promoted our call for entries in the Monitor section of their site added a Blog post; and the already assembled army of followers continued to blog, twitter and spread the word in many weird, wonderful, digital and analogue ways!
The initial fun must end for now but the story hasn’t come to an end just yet.
Interest in SuperFly is such that, while ‘beans’ cannot yet be spilled just yet, it looks like our dying fly will be re-animated in the new year.
So, exciting times continue at SuperFly HQ.
Please continue to spread the word, please remember us when you blog, particularly at the end of the year when you do your ‘creative review’s’ and lets see if this phenomenon can forge on a creative path to be followed.
Genuine BIG thanks to all those who have given FREELY of time, resources, materials and ‘mental’ support – don’t go anywhere, we’re not gone, we’re just on a break!
For a detailed overview SuperFly ’09, the artists, their work, where you can find/commission them and also details on other press links regarding Superfly, visit the Exhibition ’09 page: http://superfly.org.uk/art09/
And don’t forget, the SuperFly web fun continues with SuperFly on the Wall; Get SuperFly’d, get your work on this site - for details see the previous entry on this blog.
Call for entries, call for entries, come one, come all!
It’s a bit early for SuperFly’10 – still working on how we’re going to pay for that one – but in the meantime why not make use of the space we have..?
‘SuperFly on the Wall’ is an opportunity for ‘us’, the world, to see what you good creative folks are up to, as if we were a fly on your wall. We want to see your workspace, what you do, what drives you, inspires you; also where we can see more of you work, in cyberspace, exhibition space and beyond.
Taking part neither excludes you from future SuperFly exhibitions nor guarantees you a space, and when we do call for 2010 exhibition entries you WILL need to re-submit – whether it’s something we’ve already seen or not would be entirely up to you.
Send images of work, a brief bio and all the stuff previously mentioned - The first SFotW will be online shortly after the exhibition closes next Monday. So get moving, let us see what you’ve got..!
In related news it’s now very likely that you will have an opportunity to see a selection of posters and images of the ’09 exhibition at NEoN! :D
Bell Street Car Park will be known to most in the City, but, in case you hadn’t noticed it is a special place for frequent SuperFlyers because you can see each of the seven winners within yards of each other.
Approaching from the north side of the Bell Street Underpass and bear left towards Abertay Uni you will see each in of the final seven ever 3 or 4 poster sites – 4 are just about visible in the picture above.
So, any lazy types who are yet to search out the whole set can cheat with a visit to Bell Street. Go along and have a look! :)
With SuperFly being a street exhibition it was a tough decision knowing when to put images online without spoiling the ‘live’ experience. But, to a large extent, SuperFly has been driven by Twitter and the web so it’s only fair that almost two weeks in, all you folks outside of Dundee, get a full set of images.
I’m conscious that the gallery 0f submissions and artist profiles need updating and this will happen over the next 3-4 days – this week has been busy, distributing SuperFly guy’ds (now all over town, see the Guy’d page), but attention will turn again to the web, I promise! (I need a team!)
So, please let us know what you think of the exhibition – either by leaving comments on the blog, emailing (superguy(at)superfly(dot)org(dot)uk) or twitter (@onthesuperfly) – all these opinions help us organise SuperFly’10 and show our sponsors that you good folks are paying attention and are worth the support :)
UPDATE: Creative Review have done a piece on SuperFly on their blog! SuperFly arrives!
So, how did you fare, finding the posters on the street..?
Well, now you have the perfect guy’d and memento of the exhibition – totally free of charge thanks to our friends at Winters Print.
It’s an A3 poster folded to A5 and contains images of the winning entries plus the SuperFly map and a brief explanation, for the uninitiated, of what SuperFly is…
So, as of 4.45pm today you will be able to pick one of these up at Groucho’s or DCA, Dundee. Thereafter Guy’ds will be around town in as many places as I can think of – if you’d like to help in this task please drop me an email.
